Ligue 1 Winners List

Ligue 1 is a French professional league for men’s association football clubs. The league was founded in 1930. Olympique Lillois won the first-ever Ligue 1 title, with Cannes coming in as the runner-up. The league title started with the name ‘National’ before switching to ‘Division 1’ after a year of existence.

Lyon has won the Ligue 1 title seven times. Remarkably, all their seven titles came in back-to-back seasons. They won their first league title in the 2001-02 season. They won seven times in a row till the 2007-08 season. Despite this impressive run, they have failed to win the Ligue 1 title since.

Nantes was founded on April 21, 1943. Nantes have won the Ligue 1 title eight times. It took the club over two decades to win their first league title. Their first league title came in the 1964-65 season. They also managed to retain the title in the 1965-66 season. This is the only time Nantes have won in back-to-back seasons. Their eighth and final title came in the 2000-01 season.

AS Monaco was founded in 1924. It has been nearly a century since it came into existence. Since then, AS Monaco has won eight Ligue 1 titles, with their first one coming in the 1960-61 season. While they have won eight titles, only one has come in the 21st century. This was their eighth and final title, which they won in the 2016-17 season.

Marseille is the third most successful team in the French league. They are one of the oldest teams and came into existence in 1899. They won their first title in the 1936-37 season. While Olympique de Marseille have been competitive in recent years, they have won only one title in the 21st century. This came in the 2009-10 season.

2. Saint-Etienne (10 Titles)

Saint-Etienne has won 10 Ligue 1 titles in its history. The club was founded in 1919 by the Saint-Etienne-based grocery store chain Groupe Casino employees. The club won their first title in the 1956-57 season. While they are the second most successful club in Ligue 1 history, the club has not gotten a title since the 1980-81 season.

Paris Saint-Germain is the most successful club in Ligue 1 history. While their first title came in the 1985-86 season, they have found most of their success in recent years. The club has been extremely dominant in the modern era. They have won nine of their 11 titles in the 21st century, with all nine coming in the last 11 years.
