The Indian cricket team is meant to be one of the best sides in world cricket. Despite the team having glorious days in the past, 2022 was a year to forget for the Men in Blue. The team suffered multiple heartbreaks this year and will look to get back to their best at the earliest. Here’s why 2022 was one of the worst years for the Indian national cricket team.
India started the year by losing the Test series against Proteas in South Africa. Despite heading into the red ball matches confidently, the Indian side failed to deliver when it mattered and ended up losing the series. It also hurt their performance in white ball cricket, with the visitors losing the ODI series against South Africa.
Later on, the Indian cricket team went on to do well at home but failed to perform yet again when they were on tour. Playing against England, they failed to win the fifth Test match at Edgbaston, which would have handed them a historic series win against Ben Stokes’ side. India failed to make the most of the opportunity, which also heavily affected their chances of making it to the World Test Championship 2021-2023 Finals.

Despite faring well in the white ball matches against the same opposition, India’s inability to command solid wins alongside inconsistent performances on away soil was not a good sign, especially with two highly awaited mega events around the corner.
India’s second-string sides had good outings against Zimbabwe and West Indies. However, the poor record on crucial tours and major tournaments continued for the World Cup 2011 winners. The Indian cricket team took part in the Asia Cup and failed to make it to the finals of the six-nation competition. Despite the Asia Cup 2022 failure, fans expected Rohit Sharma and co to learn from their mistakes and do well in the ICC T20 World Cup.
With Virat Kohli’s return to form and Arshdeep Singh’s rise as a T20 bowler, India were favourites to lift the title for the second time. However, the curse struck again, and India lost to the eventual winner, England in the seminal final of the tournament.
To make matters worse, India failed to get going against New Zealand right after the ICC T20 World Cup. A bilateral ODI series loss to neighbours Bangladesh followed up with Indian cricket losing the matches, despite playing most of the first team members.
India in 2022:
– Lost the Test series in SA.
– Lost the ODI series in SA.
– Lost the 5th Test in ENG.
– Couldn’t qualify into Asia Cup final.
– Lost in the Semi-final of T20 WC.
– Lost the ODI series in NZ.
– Lost the ODI series in BAN.— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) December 7, 2022
A lot has gone wrong for the Indian cricket team this year. From giving senior players unnecessary rest to poor squad selections, BCCI failed miserably with its planning. It is also worth noting that the Indian cricket team had more than eight players captain the side over the year, which also meant a ton of experimentation.
The series loss against Bangladesh with the ICC ODI World Cup just around the corner is a bad sign for the Indian cricket team. They are yet to form a core group of players and narrow down their preferred playing for the One Day format with the ODI World Cup less than 11 months away.
While there were a lot of negatives for the Indian cricket team, it is also worth noting that the core group of players rarely played together with cricketers either rested or injured across tournaments. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are expected to be a key feature for the Men in Blue for the upcoming ODI matches.
They will join the likes of Kohli, Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav as the Rahul Dravid coached side aim to bring back ICC glory to the country. Despite having a year to forget in 2022, there is a lot to look forward for in 2023. It will be interesting to see how the Indian cricket team fares next year.
