West Indies star Chris Gayle sent Twitter into meltdown when the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star posed for a picture with the former owner of his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Vijay Mallya. He recently caught up with Mallya who tweeted a photo of him and Gayle with the caption “Great to catch up with my good friend Christopher Henry Gayle @henrygayle, the Universe Boss. Super friendship since I recruited him for RCB. Best acquisition of a player ever.”

The tweet has gathered nearly 58,000 ‘likes’ with over 2500 retweets since it was posted. It has caused a stir on social media because Mallya is currently on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. However, the liquor tycoon is free on bail as he awaits the result of his judicial proceeding.

Gayle featured for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 and 2010 before being picked up as a replacement player in 2011 by RCB. Since then, he has gone on to become a household name in IPL for his exploits over the years. The West Indies power hitter played some of his best T20 cricket in an RCB jersey while forming a deadly partnership with the likes of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. He was also recently inducted into the Hall of Fame this year alongside the former South African captain.
The 42-year-old remained associated till 2017 before playing for Punjab Kings. So far, he has amassed 4965 runs in IPL history while hitting the ball at a strike rate of 148.9. The “Universal Boss” also has 6 centuries in the league with a high score of 175* which is the highest ever score registered by any player in the tournament’s history.
After his stints with RCB and Punjab Kings, Gayle did not register himself and opted against taking part in IPL 2022. The left-handed batter did not feel valued after he played just 10 games in IPL 2021 where he registered 193 runs with a strike rate of 125.32.
However, Gayle is expected to return in the IPL 2023 with the West Indian expected to make himself available for the next season. It remains interesting to see which IPL side would choose to rope in the 42 year old opener in search of the coveted trophy.
