Former England captain Nasser Hussain has heaped a mountain of praise for a turnaround in the Three Lions’ fortunes in Test cricket. The English team found themselves at the rock bottom in the longest format of the game after losing consecutive series against Australia and West Indies.
However, there has been a drastic change after Joe Root resigned as Test captain. Hussain has gone on to laud the likes of new red ball captain Ben Stokes, and new Test coach Brendon McCullum alongside Rob Key for their impact on the red ball team.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opted for an unorthodox approach in the last few months when they decided to have two separate coaches, based on the format of the game. The move has worked so far with McCullum’s appointment as Test coach. He has led England to four successive victories, with the team playing an aggressive brand of cricket under Stokes.
While writing in his Daily Mail column, Hussain expressed his surprise at the new-look of the English team. He added how McCullum’s ability to provide clarity and aggression to the team alongside Stokes has made the team a great at run chases so far.
He said, “These were excellent appointments, but I do not think any of us could have predicted how good it would be this summer or how quickly England would improve. McCullum has guaranteed that England will not be intimidated by the game. They are not overthinking or getting anxious about what is ahead of them.”
The former England captain added, “They are just trying on their pads or picking up a ball and going out to have fun. They have been doing remind that trying to play for England is indeed a wonderful experience that should not be taken lightly.”

Hussain also spoke about Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow in his blog for Sky Sports, praising them for their excellent performances against India He said, “The form that Jonny Bairstow and Root are in – I can’t remember a pair of England cricketers being in such form for such a sustained period.”
He further added: “The way they are playing is just what normal Root and Bairstow can do. Every time they have taken a risk, they have nailed it. They have been so smart, so sensible. You cannot bowl to those two at the moment. That’s how good they are.”
