The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup on Monday. It saw the return of star batters in Virat Kohli and KL Rahul rejoin the Men in Blue while the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were ruled out due to their respective injuries.
Former India chief selector Kiran More spoke on the absence of one key player from the Men in Blues’ team after the latest announcement. Ishan Kishan, Kuldeep Yadav and Sanju Samson who were a part of the Indian team for the recently concluded 5 match T20I series against West Indies failed to make the cut to the Asia Cup squad. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar did not make it to the list of 15-man squad but were named as stand-by players for the six-nation tournament.

However, Kiran More went on to speak about Mohammed Shami with the former cricketer emphasizing how the pacer should have been a part of the Indian squad. Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues, the former India chief selector said, “The way Hardik made his comeback was impressive. He’s now bowling 140+. A captain wants a player like that — who can score runs, take wickets, and be alert on the field. But I also want to say one thing — this team won’t go into the World Cup until Mohammed Shami comes into the side. These are back-ups who are travelling there, as preparation for the World Cup.”
“Shami must go for the World Cup, I still say that. Rahul Dravid has this process, he likes to have back-ups. If a bowler gets injured, someone like Avesh Khan can be useful in the World Cup. I don’t know what is the extent of Bumrah’s injury, but come the World Cup, and Bumrah (if fit) and Shami will definitely go to World Cup,” Kiran More added.
The Indian cricket team is all set to square off against Zimbabwe in a limited-over series before playing the Asia Cup. They are set to The Men in Blue will lock horns against archrivals Pakistan in the first game at the 6-nation tournament. Rohit Sharma and co will walk into the tournament as defending champions will be eager to have a solid campaign with the ICC T20 World Cup in sight.
