F1 Announces Las Vegas Grand Prix For 2023

Fans of Formula 1 will be excited to know that the popular sports race is set to return to Las Vegas in 2023. This return will also introduce the Saturday Night Races on a track that will integrate the city’s famous strip. As per news reports, plans for the Las Vegas race to be the third Grand Prix in the United States is one of Formula 1’s leading priorities on the calendar.

In recent months, negotiations with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority have accelerated and an agreement has been reached with an initial duration of three years. While a date has not yet been finalized, it is speculated that the 50-lap race will be held in November with a date on Thanksgiving (25th November) being proposed.

The track will have a long but relatively simple 3.8-mile layout with four corners and has been designed around the city’s famous landmarks, hotels, and casinos. This is a much better improvement from the previous time the city was a part of the F1 race. Held in 1981 and 1982, The Caesars Palace Grand Prix used a repetitive and dull layout in the car park of the famous hotel, which is how the race got its name.

This new race was formally announced on Wednesday evening with Liberty Media chief Greg Maffei, in attendance in Las Vegas. His presence was a sign of the significance of this deal to F1’s US owner. Since they took over the commercial rights of the championship in the 2017 edition, Liberty Media pursued its expansion in the US.

The Las Vegas race will follow the Miami Grand Prix, following the latter’s debut in May. The race will be held a few weeks after the United States Grand Prix in Austin on the 2023 schedule. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said, “There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the world’s global entertainment capital and we cannot wait to be here next year.”

For those who are not familiar with F1 as a sport, we recommend watching ‘Drive to Survive’ on Netflix for an understanding of what the hype is all about. The documentary series provides a sneak peek into the lives of the drivers and the races held at the Formula One World Championship.
