Indian Premier League (IPL) giants Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have confirmed ownership of a team in South Africa’s new upcoming domestic T20 League. Earlier, it was reported that 29 interested parties had submitted an Expressions of Interest (EoIs) to CSA.
Earlier, it is being reported that six franchises in South Africa’s T20 league saw current IPL team owners make the winnings bids. Chennai Super Kings have made an announcement of their stake of a team in the South African tournament with one of the most successful team in IPL history picking up the Johannesburg based side.

This is CSK’s first investment in an overseas T20 competition with fellow IPL franchises already venturing into other tournaments across the globe. CSK CEO KS Viswanathan was quoted speaking on their acquisition. He said, “We have been evaluating new opportunities across the globe over the past few years. We felt this T20 league in South Africa will be highly competitive and it is a great opportunity for us to give back to the sport. It would also help us to spot new talent.”

Former Proteas captain Greame Smith was recently appointed the head of the league. He has shared his thoughts on the news of having new owns in the South Africa’s new upcoming T20 tournament.
The 41-year-old is quoted saying, “We are thrilled to welcome our new franchise owners to the South African League taking place in January and February 2023. This is truly an exciting time for South African cricket; the overwhelming interest shows that the country remains valued in the global cricketing eco-system.”
He added, “A robust bidding process was followed to select the final six owners, the decision was informed by a scorecard based on various criteria to ensure the utmost professionalism, independence, and objectivity to the process.”
“The strong sports background of the respective owners and the global brands they manage ensures that South African cricket and the broader industry will benefit from their expertise and resources, as they bring stability and experience to the League,” Smith said.
