Sussex’s regular skipper Haines was seen walking off the ground after breaking a bone in the previous encounter. The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for nearly six weeks which will have a massive impact on the county side’s performances this season. Citing the injury news, Pujara has been named as the captain of the Sussex team. Earlier, Steven Finn was seen leading the side when Haines had walked off the field after suffering from the injury.

The head coach of Sussex, Ian Salisbury shared his thoughts on the Indian star’s appointment as interim captain. He has nothing but praises for the test specialist and feels that the cricketers’ experience at the highest level will help the county outfit. The 52-year-old went on to add how Pujara’s appointment will also help Fin by taking the pressure off from the speedster, allowing him to focus on bowling.
Salisbury has been quoted by Sussex in a statement saying, “Puj was very keen to step up in the absence of Tom. He sees the potential in this side and has been a natural leader ever since he joined. Finny did a brilliant job for us after Tom was injured and will remain the senior figure among our bowlers. By having a batter take up the role, it means Finn can focus on leading our attack. Puj is a vastly experienced and qualified person who I know will do a fantastic job.”
Pujara has played exceptionally well for Sussex this season. He has managed to record 766 runs in six innings so far and boasts a jaw dropping average of 110. The 34 year old also scored two double tons alongside four centuries and will be eager to replicate such strong performances with the added responsibility of captaincy on his shoulders against Middlesex.
