The highly anticipated T20 World Cup is all set to kick start on October 16 with the 8th edition of the ICC event scheduled to be played in Australia. The hosts are also the defending champions having lifted the coveted trophy in 2021.
T20 cricket is a format dominated heavily by batsmen, some of the batters have lit the tournament on fire with their batting prowess. Mahela Jayawardene is only one name on the elite list who has breached the 1000 run barrier in the T20 World Cup. Unsurprisingly, the former Sri Lankan skipper also boasts the record of scoring most runs in the ICC T20 WC history.
The former opener tops the list having scored 1016 runs from 31 matches with Chris Gayle (965) and Tilakaratne Dilshan (897) are behind him. He particularly shined in the shortest format of the game during the 2009 edition of the World Cup, 302 runs while registering a strike rate of 159.78. He ended up hitting two half-centuries and one century in the single edition.
However, Jayawardene’s record is in danger as three players are not far away from becoming the highest run getters in the T20 World Cup. There are 2 Indian players in the in contention to break that Jayewardene’s record in ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The Indian team captain is currently fourth highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup history so far. He is the highest ACTIVE run scorer in the tournament history as the three players slotted above him, have retired from international cricket. The 35-year-old has played 31 matches in the T20 World Cup, scoring 847 runs in the tournament.
Sharma, who is one of the only two players that have played in every T20 world Cup needs just 169 runs to edge past Jayawardene’s tally. He has been in excellent form citing the recently concluded T20I series against Australia and will fancy his chances to end as the highest run-getter in the T20 World Cup history.
Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli is the only batsman in history to win two ‘Man of the Tournament’ awards in the T20 World Cup. He has been a stand out player in the tournament having scored 845 runs in just 19 innings so far. With an incredible average of 76.81, Kohli surely brings out his best at the biggest stage.
Sitting just 2 runs behind Rohit Sharma in the top run-getter list, the 33 year old needs 171 runs in the T20 World Cup 2022 to be the highest scorer in tournament history. Given the form Kohli has shown in the Asia Cup as well as against Australia, the 2011 World Cup is well on his way to shatter Jayawardene’s feat and register yet another record to his name in Australia next month.
