Pakistan Cricket Board Is All Set To Sack Babar Azam And Coaching Staff: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering a change in leadership for the national team following the ongoing World Cup. Reports from India Today suggest that former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, and pacer Shaheen Afridi are being looked at as possible replacements for Babar Azam as the team’s captain.
Pakistan’s 2023 World Cup campaign started on a high note, winning their first two games. However, the Men in Green faced a setback, with three consecutive losses pushing them down to the fifth spot on the points table. Notably, they suffered a surprising defeat to Afghanistan.
During Afghanistan’s remarkable run-chase of 283, Babar Azam’s captaincy decisions drew significant attention. His leadership has been under the microscope due to the team’s recent losses.
According to inside sources, Babar Azam’s future as captain is hanging by a thread. The team must perform a miraculous comeback to secure a spot in the World Cup semi-finals for him to have a chance of retaining the captaincy, and even then, he might be limited to leading in red ball cricket.
Before the World Cup, Pakistan’s performance at the Asia Cup was disappointing, where they finished at the bottom of the Super Fours table. Babar Azam, aged 29, has captained the team in 130 games across formats with a win percentage of 58.46%.
Along with the potential change in captaincy, there are reports of a shift in Pakistan’s coaching staff post-World Cup. The current coaching staff, including Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, Mornie Merkel, Andrew Puttick, and manager Rehan ul Haq, might be replaced.

There’s a growing belief that Pakistan’s cricket setup will undergo substantial changes. A new coaching staff and captain may be in place for the Test tour of Australia and the white ball series in New Zealand following the World Cup.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, who is not part of the World Cup squad, has previously led Pakistan in 100 games across formats with a commendable win percentage. Mohammad Rizwan has captained the team only twice, losing both matches, while Shaheen Afridi has no prior experience as Pakistan’s skipper.
After the World Cup, Pakistan is set to embark on a three-Test tour of Australia starting on December 14. Their next World Cup match against South Africa on 27th October is crucial to keep their tournament hopes alive.
