Australia and South African cricketers are set to honour cricket icon Shane Warne and pay tribute to the legendry leg spinner by wearing floppy hats at the Boxing Day Test. Cricket Australia (CA) revealed the tributes sharing how players from both teams will don floppy hats during national anthems at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The second Test match between Australia and South Africa will be the first game at late spin bowling great’s home ground since his death. The Australian passed away at the age of 52 when he was on a vacation in Thailand in March 2022.
Cricket Australia shared how they wanted to commemorate 26th December (Day 1 of the second Test match) with Warne’s hat citing, significance of MCG in the cricketers’ career. CA Chief Executive, Nick Hockley is quoted by The Guardian saying, “Shane Warne is an icon to cricket fans globally for the greatness of his cricketing achievements, his charisma and his infectious enthusiasm for the game.”

He further added, “His place as a legend of Australian and world sport is assured. Whilst we continue to mourn his passing, it is fitting that we honour Shane Warne at his beloved Boxing Day Test at the MCG. I know I speak for the whole cricket community in saying that our thoughts continue to be with Shane’s family and friends and particularly his children Brooke, Jackson and Summer.”
Warne is synonymous with the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as plenty of the spinner’s achievements happened at the same venue. The former Aussie cricketer took his Ashes hat-trick (in 1994) at the MCG, with his 700th wicket also coming at the same ground 12 years later.
Warne is set to take centre stage once again at the MCG with his Test cap number, 350, displayed at the square of the wicket during the match. MCG’s also renamed their Great Southern Stand named in Warne’s honour following his death. The upcoming red-ball clash at MCG blockbuster will be the first game on the ground since Warne’s tragic death and will be a highly emotional affair.
CA has encouraged fans to don the trademark look of Warne for the game, with the audience expected to show up wearing floppy hats and zinc cream, just like the Victorian did when attending the second Test match of the series. The big screen at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is also set to display a graphic of Warne and play a highlights package of his career during the match.
