Australia’s injury woes continue to hamper their preparations during their ongoing tour to Sri Lanka with Marcus Stoinis ruled out from the ongoing the One Day International (ODI) series. The Aussie all-rounder has suffered from a side strain niggle ahead of the 2nd ODI. Ashton Agar’s availability also falls under the cloud of uncertainty with the spinner reported to be suffering from a similar issue.

Sri Lanka are also rumored to be affect by some injury news with the Islandic nation set to miss Wanindu Hasaranga for the upcoming game. The SL spinner played a key role with the bat and ball almost helping his edge out Australia in the first ODI. According to various media reports, Hasaranga is rumored to be ruled out of the second match due to a groin strain. Further reports reveal that the SL medical staff has not been able to predict the extent of injury and determine when the player could return to action.

Both the teams will be eager to overcome their injury woes especially in their spin department. While it is very difficult for Sri Lanka to find a replacement for Hasaranga, they do have the option to bring Jeffrey Vandersay in the team. However, Vandersay’s inclusion in the playing XI will dampen the team’s batting depth which could see Sri Lanka opt to bowl Dhananjaya de Silva while roping in Bhanuka Rajapaksa to strengthen their batting.
Australia, on the other hand, could look to bring in Mitchell Swepson as a replacement for Agar in the team. However, Matthew Kuhnemann has also been called up to join the first team from the Australia A squad while Travis Head joins him to replace Stoinis.
Australia’s current tour to Sri Lanka has seen them struggling in keeping players fit for the whole tournament. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh Kane Richardson and Sean Abbott have all been sidelined from action after picking up various injures throughout the course of the ongoing tour.
If Agar is ruled out of the whole series, Australia will have Kuhnemann stick around with the first team and join the likes of Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson for the two Test matches. It would provide the tourists an opportunity to field three spinners for the upcoming games.
