Anrich Nortje is known to be in the elite bracket of being amongst the fastest pacers in the cricketing fraternity right now. The 28-year-old has not shied away from expressing his opinion while speaking about the comparisons between him and Indian pace sensation Umran Malik.
Malik rose to the lime light in the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2022. The 22-year-old managed to bowl deliveries clocking speeds in excess of 150 kmph on a consistent basis. His ability to bowl with such raw pace sees the Jammu based speedster draw comparisons with few of the fastest bowlers in the world.

Speaking about Malik, Nortje shared how he is not bothered with who is the fastest bowler while keeping a keen eye on the speed gun. Rather, the SA star is focused on playing a key role for the team and contributing towards the team’s success.
He was quoted saying, “ Not really bothered about who is the fastest and what the speed gun is, it is about contributing to the team. When I train, when I am not playing, you obviously think about how you can get fast with the way you train, whatever you are doing. In the back of my mind, it would be something I will keep on striving towards but it is not something I think about when I go to the field.”
The comments were made when Nortje faced the media ahead of the fourth T20I match during South Africa’s tour to India. During his pre match press conference, the Proteas’ pacer was asked about who will bowl the fastest delivery in the series.
Nortje also shared his thoughts on the Indian fast bowler, who could make his debut in Rajkot by saying, “Umran Malik is a very good bowler, a very fast bowler. He has shown what he can do. If he gets faster, great for him. If I get faster, great for me. I do not think we are at the stage where we are competing to bowl the fastest ball, it is about winning games and trying to contribute.”
The Proteas currently lead the 5-match series with a 2-1 margin having won the first two games. However, India managed to pull one back by registering a massive 48 run win at Visakhapatnam. Nortje and South Africa will look to pocket the tournament with a win in Rajkot while India looks to draw the series level.
