India Women’s ICC T20 World Cup campaign got off to a disastrous start as their match against New Zealand on 4th October 2024 ended with the Kiwis winning by a huge margin of 58 runs. This loss meant more than just two points lost. India has a tough group, which includes New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Therefore, such a huge loss to New Zealand causes a big problem when it comes to the run rate and will end up being very problematic if the qualification scenario ends up coming down to the Net Run Rate (NRR).

While it was not an ideal start to life, it has not been all bad for India at the World Cup so far. Their second game was against Pakistan, India’s fierce rivals. The match took place on 6th October 2024, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India performed brilliantly with the ball and restricted the opposition to just 105 runs. The India Women’s Team managed to chase this down comfortably, winning the game by six wickets. While they did not increase their run rate by much, as they took 18.5 overs to chase it, winning against Pakistan will surely have brought a sweet taste to the mouth of the Indian cricketers.

India has two group-stage games remaining, one against Sri Lanka and the other against Australia. Ideally, now that India has lost to New Zealand, they will hope that the Kiwis can beat Australia as well. This will mean that both Australia and India will be on two points with two games to go. If India beat Sri Lanka and Australia beat Pakistan, the game between India and Australia will more or less be a decider to see which team makes it to the semi-final of the tournament.
If Australia wins against New Zealand, India will be in a slightly more precarious position. As New Zealand’s NRR is very high, India will probably need New Zealand to lose either to Sri Lanka or Pakistan. In the event New Zealand loses to Australia but wins against the other two teams while India beats Australia in their final match, all three teams of Australia, New Zealand, and India would end with six points each. This would not be the best-case scenario for the India Women’s team as their net run rate is much lower now than that of Australia or New Zealand.
The India Women’s team may regret the huge margin they lost to New Zealand and the small margin they beat Pakistan by if it does end up coming down to the NRR. For India to beat either Australia or New Zealand on Net Run Rate, they would need huge wins against both Sri Lanka and Australia. While a big win may be loading against Sri Lanka, the game against Australia will be much tougher, and it will be very interesting to see what happens in the game between India Women’s Team and Australia.
