The first edition of the Ranji Trophy took place in 1934-35. Bombay Cricket Team (now called Mumbai Cricket Team) was the first-ever winner of this tournament.
Mumbai have won a total of 42 Ranji trophy titles, winning their latest one in the 2023-24 season. They won the latest season of the Ranji Trophy, ending a wait of eight years to get their hands on the title. They last won the tournament in the 2015-16 season. Although the two wins are quite far apart, there are some players who won the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai Cricket Team in both the 2015-16 and 2023-24 seasons. Shardul Thakur made his first appearance in the 2023-24 season of the Ranji Trophy in the group stage against Chhattisgarh. Thakur played an extremely key role in the semifinal and the final. He took four wickets in the final and scored 109 runs to help his team beat Tamil Nadu and qualify for the final. While Thakur took only one wicket in the final, he contributed with the bat once again.
He made 75 runs in 69 balls in the first innings to help his team put the pressure on Vidarbha. His knock was a big help and eventually helped the Mumbai Cricket Team lift their 42nd Ranji Trophy title. Thakur is another player who has won with the Mumbai before. Dhawal Kulkarni played in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy with Mumbai Cricket Team and won with them. In 2023-24, Kulkarni was on the brink of announcing his retirement. However, the team convinced him to postpone his retirement till after the Ranji Trophy ended. They wanted his guidance for the tournament, and he did so perfectly. He helped the youngsters where he could and put in some fantastic performances himself, too. The 2023-24 Ranji Trophy final was the last game of Dhawal Kulkarni’s career. It is wonderful to see that such a fantastic player will retire after lifting the Ranji Trophy for one last time in his career.

Jay Bista made his first-class cricket debut during the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy. He won the coveted title in his debut season with the Mumbai Cricket Team. Jay Bista had to wait eight years to win the Ranji Trophy again. He helped Mumbai Cricket Team by opening in the absence of Prithvi Shaw. The Indian player performed very well until Prithvi Shaw was declared fit to play, and he replaced Jay Bista in the starting XI. While Bista did get replaced, his contributions in helping his team win the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy cannot be discounted. He is another one of the cricketers who has won the Ranji Trophy title in both the 2015-16 and 2023-24 seasons.
