ICC Reveals Venues For World Test Championship Final 2023 And 2025

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the venues for the World Test Championship (WTC) Finals in 2023 and 2025. The WTC 2023 final is set to be played at The Oval in June with the 2025 Final scheduled to take placed at the iconic Lord’s Stadium.

Both the ICC finals are set to be played in London and will succeed Southampton, which played host to the first-ever Final of the World Test Championship that saw India and New Zealand contest to walk away with the mace in 2021. The Kiwis had emerged victorious in the first edition of the World Test Championship.

The upcoming ICC WTC final will be played at the Oval in June 2023. The top two teams in the World Test Championship standings at the end of the current ongoing cycle will feature in the Final. The Oval has previously hosted the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy Finals in 2004 as well as 2017.

Latest ICC WTC 2023 Standings

Currently, Australia and South Africa are ranked as the top two teams on the ICC WTC table with Australia having a points percentage of 70%, while the Proteas boast a points percentage of 60%. Both the teams are set to take on each other in a three-match series that is scheduled to take place between December 2022 and January 2023. The highly anticipated series could go on to have a massive impact on which teams make the cut and qualify to feature in the ICC World Test Championship Final at the Oval in June 2023.

Sri Lanka (53.33%), India (52.08%) and Pakistan (51.85%) are the remaining 3 teams that complete the top 5 rankings  round up the top five of the standings. With many series still to go in the current cycle, there could be many twists and turns in the points table before the two finalists are decided.

ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice shared his thoughts following the announcement of both the venues. He is quoted saying, “We are delighted to be hosting next year’s ICC World Test Championship Final at The Oval which has such a rich legacy and an amazing atmosphere, which is ideal for such an important fixture on the calendar.”

“Following that we will then take the 2025 Final to Lord’s which will provide a fitting backdrop to the ultimate Test. Last year’s final between New Zealand and India in Southampton was an engrossing encounter. I am sure fans the world over would be looking forward to the next WTC final at The Oval. On behalf of the ICC, I would like to thank the England and Wales Cricket Board, Surrey County Cricket Club and Marylebone Cricket Club for their support,” the ICC Chief Executive further added.
