Former India selector and wicketkeeper Saba Karim has shared his advice for the Men in Blue. He feels that the Indian team think tank needs to be patient with the batting duo of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli if they are on the verge of coming back to their best.
KL Rahul, who returned from a long layoff failed to get going upon his return to international cricket against Zimbabwe. His struggles with the bat continued in Asia Cup 2022 as the 31-year-old was dismissed on the first ball against Pakistan. Despite getting amongst the runs by scoring 36 runs against Hong Kong, the opener seemed uncomfortable during his stay at the crease.
Kohli, on the other hand, managed to spend some time in the middle managing to hit an unbeaten 59 off 44 deliveries. His partnership with Suryakumar Yadav was the deciding factor for the Men in Blue who went on to register a 40-run win over the associate nation. The win over Hong Kong saw Rohit Sharma’s side become the second team after Afghanistan to advance to the Super 4 round.
After India’s win, the former keeper shared how difficult it is for any player to get into a rhythm following a long break or after recovering from an injury. Speaking with India News Sports as follows, Saba Karim spoke on Rahul and Kohli’s performance.
He said, “The ball was halting a little bit early since the wicket was new. I think that we might have scored 15-20 more runs, but you must realize that KL Rahul and Virat Kohli are two players who are returning to the team after a lengthy absence.”
“If you anticipate too much too quickly, it will cause problems for your team. You need to nurture your seasoned players when they return from a sabbatical,” Saba Karim added. Following the win over Hong Kong, The Men in Blue will go onto to feature in their first game of the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2022. They are set to play the winner of the Pakistan vs Hong Kong clash which is scheduled to be played on 2nd September.
