Ravi Ashwin Decodes Trent Boult’s Decision To Skip NZC Contract

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views on Trent Boult’s decision of not renewing his central contract with the country’s cricket board. The pace bowler had opted against signing a central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), who revealed the speedsters’ wishes on August 10.

The 33-year-old’s decision to not sign a central contract was done in order to allow him to spend more time with his family while also remaining available for various franchise T20 leagues overseas. Despite not signing a central contract, the New Zealand pacer has not retired and put an end to his international career. Boult is said to remain available for selection for the Black Caps, but his participation will be restricted.

Boults’ Rajasthan Royals team-mate Ravichandran Ashwin spoke at length about the Kiwi speedsters’ decision. The Indian spinner feels that the Black Caps pacer will go on to earn more from playing in various T20 leagues over a national contract.

Speaking on his official Youtube channel, Ashwin said, “Trent Boult’s IPL contract is worth ₹8.25 crore. If he doesn’t sign his central contract with New Zealand and plays IPL, CSA T20 league and the UAE T20 league, he will make more money than what he will make by playing for New Zealand. If he signs the contract, the board will ask him to play international cricket since he will be a contracted player. So, just for that professional and financial liberation, he is not signing the central contract.”

The trend of franchise cricket started off with the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Since then, almost every big cricketing nation has a T20 league of its own. While Cricket Australia has Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Cricket Board’s has the Pakistan Super League, the England ‘Cricket board starting a tournament called ‘The Hundred’. Soon After deciding against signing a central contract, Trent Boult agreed to feature for MI Emirates in the inaugural season of the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20).

Speaking on the impact of franchise cricket on the international calendar, Ravichandran Ashwin said, “But the future of international cricket and its calendar is going to be largely affected by franchise cricket. We should take these leagues forward carefully. The health of international cricket will safeguard the health of cricket as a whole.”
