Former India wicket keeper Syed Kirmani shared his opinion on Virat Kohli’s selection for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup. The 72-year-old has not only called for the former India skipper’s inclusion in the squad but also described Kohli to be “game changer” at the ICC event.
The 33-year old’s place in the Indian team has been questioned over the last few months given his poor form with the bat. He has been far away from his best and failed to live up to the expectations in the recently concluded white ball series against England.
The former Indian skipper, who was rested for the first T20, managed to score just one run in the second clash. His valiant effort to play aggressive cricket backfired in the last T20 as he was sent back to the hut after scoring just 11 runs. Kohli’s batting did not improve much in the ODI series, which were played after the T20I clashes with the 33 year old failing in both the games he played.
Speaking with Dainik Jagran, Kirmani spoke on the 2011 World Cup winner’s experience explaining why the 33-year-old should be a part of the Indian team that will fly out to Australia. He is quoted saying, “Virat Kohli has loads of experience. He should be in the T20 World Cup squad. Once Kohli returns to form, he will be unstoppable. He could be a game-changer. A player with Kohli’s experience and abilities deserves to be in the World Cup squad.”
The wicket keeper-batter added, “There is tough competition in the Indian team. Look, if someone else was going through the rough patch that Kohli is, he would have been dropped from the team by now. But I feel that an established player should be given the benefit of the doubt.”

Kohli has currently been rested from the upcoming tour to the West Indies which sees India play three ODIs and five T20Is. He is expected to return to the national team set up for Asia Cup 2022 which is scheduled to be played in the third week of August.
The upcoming 6-team affair will be a major factor impacting decisions of the Indian team management as the think tank looks to shortlist its players for the T20 World Cup. It remains interesting to see what approach Rahul Dravid and team skipper Rohit Sharma opt for the ahead of the ICC event.
