Sanju Samson’s Exclusion From WI T20I Squad Raises Questions

Sanju Samson was trending on Twitter as BCCI announced 18-man squad for the West Indies T20 games. Big names in Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yuzvendra Chahal were not called up for the 5-match series against the Caribbean outfit. While fans questioned if Kohli was dropped or rested, some fans took to Twitter sharing their unhappiness as Samson was not included in the squad.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) star has been one of the most consistent hitters in the shortest format of the game. He also had a season to remember in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he captained RR to the final, only to lose out against Gujarat Titans.

The wicket-keeper batter was awarded for his fantastic IPL outing with a call-up in the recently concluded T20I matches against Ireland. He did not fail to disappoint with the 27-year-old bringing up his maiden fifty for the Indian team.

Fans question Sanju Samson’s exclusion

Samson scored 77 runs in the second T20I against Ireland which saw him retain a spot in the Indian T20 team for the ongoing T20I matches against England. However, he is yet to feature against the Three Lions with Samson not included in the playing XI for the first two T20Is.

Indian cricket fans have taken to Twitter questioning Samson’s exclusion for the West Indies tour with Kohli rested for the 5 T20Is. Unlike Samson, several players who featured in the recent tours of Ireland and England were called up for the Caribbean T20I matches.

The likes of Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer have retained their place in the T20I squad. KL Rahul, who has been out of action since IPL 2022, has also been called up alongside Kuldeep Yadav.  The duo’s inclusion in the team is subjected to fitness clearance as they make a comeback after suffering from long term injuries.

Apart from Rahul and Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin is also returning to the white ball set up. The off-spinner’s last T20I outing came in November 2021 against New Zealand. The trio will be eager to come up with strong performances as India team head coach Rahul Dravid looks to shortlist his players for the T20 World Cup.
