Pat Cummins has dropped hints on the potential team for the second test match against Sri Lanka. He shared that there could be a good to see Glenn Maxwell break into the XI at Galle. The Australia skipper also spoke that they have stuck with the same 12-man squad for this clash.
The Australian all-rounder could come in place of Mitchell Starc in the team if Australia decides to add him as the third spinner. If selected, the Test match at Galle will be Maxwell’s first first-class game in over two-and-a-half years.
The Aussie skipper was quoted saying, “We’ve got Greeny there as a high-class quick bowler, Head, Marnus [Labuschagne], so I think it makes it a bit easier to know we’ve got plenty of bowling if needed. Even Nathan Lyon can lock him in from one end for most of the day. If the wicket plays a lot of tricks, I think the batting is the area you have to try and find those extra 20-30 runs somewhere.”
Cummins could also be the lone frontline in the team with Cameron Green acting as the pace-bowling option for the 2nd Test. Speaking on Maxwell, the Aussie skipper shared that the allrounder was the pick of the bowlers in the recently concluded one-day series.
Having a player like Maxwell in the team will essentially give Australia eight proper batters in the team. The Aussie skipper said, “Think he [Maxwell] was just about the pick of the bowlers in the one-day series, he was excellent, so the all-round package he brings, but especially the bowling, feel like it could easily get 15-20 overs out of him.”

The 29-year-old also spoke on how the teams picked for the Test matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan were selected with an eye on the upcoming Test series in India. The Baggy Greens are set to tour the sub continent once again and will square off with the Men in Blue in 4 Test matches.
Cummins said, “Yeah potentially. I think everyone in this squad that was picked had an eye for India as the one that we’re all building towards for next year. So absolutely, another one for Starcy, it’s going to hugely valuable for next year.”
