Alex Lees Optimistic Of England’s Win Ahead Of 5th Day

England are on the verge of registering their fourth successive win with the Three Lions in a commanding position ahead of Day 5 of  the rescheduled Test against India. The hosts find themselves at 259 for 3 at the end of Day 4 while chasing a record target of 378 in the fourth innings.

English opener Alex Lees spoke about his teams’ ongoing run chase with the media after the end of the Day 4’s play. Speaking during the post-match press conference, he said, “If we bat well for the first 30-40 minutes tomorrow (Tuesday) morning we should be in a pretty strong position (to win the match). We are just very optimistic.”

What did Alex Lees say?

Lees stitched up a fantastic opening partnership with Zak Crawley as the duo added 107 runs on board before the fall of the first wicket. Speaking about his innings, the opener shared about the mood in the England locker room. He said, “There is an ultimate belief that from one to 11 that we can do it. My role was to put some pressure on the Indian bowlers,” he added.

The 29-year-old was well settled during England’s chase in the second innings playing on 56 off just 65 balls. He looked destined for a big score and breached the three-figure mark before being run out by former England captain Joe Root. Speaking about his dismissal, Alex Lees joked how he could ask Root for lending one of his centuries.

Lees said, “Yeah, I mean, he (Joe Root) could lend me one of his Test 100’s. He has got plenty of them. But no, yeah, I mean, I saw him briefly when he came off the field and, obviously, gutted. I think that, on a personal level, obviously being run-out in two innings now is, obviously, quite hard to take.”

The opener also did not shy away from lauding praise on the new Test team captain Ben Stokes sharing how the English skipper’s spell changed the game. Alex Lees said, “(Ben) Stokes’ spell turned the game on its head. The (England) bowling this morning was the biggest turning point.”

England are pole position ahead of the 5th day with the hosts needing just 119 runs while having 7 wickets in hand.  Root and Jonny Bairstow seem pretty comfortable on the crease with the duo already amassing their half centuries yesterday. India on the other hand, had a very poor outing with the ball as the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur going for runs.
