IPL 2018: Kings XI Hold Nerve in Another Thriller

Yesterday’s IPL 2018 match was significant in multiple ways, with the lowest total defended at the Feroz Shah Kotla in its Indian Premier League history, a team extending their unbeaten streak to 5 matches, a team extending their stay at the bottom of the table, the IPL seeing its youngest ever opening batsman, a rising star winning the Man of the Match award, and many more reasons…

Delhi Daredevils won the toss and bowled first, playing at home against an in-form Kings XI Punjab. We were all set for a huge first innings total with all the KXIP batsmen in form and small boundaries in place. However, a two-paced wicket saw batsmen finding it tough to score runs, especially against the spinners and slower bowlers. Punjab only managed 143/8 in their 20 overs.

There were two huge positives Delhi could draw from their bowling performance yesterday. Firstly, 21-year old Avesh Khan was pushing good speeds yesterday, finishing with figures of 2/36 in just his second game. Similarly, Liam Plunkett bagged 3/17 on IPL debut and even though Delhi ended up losing this game, they will go into the next game with more confidence.

In the chase, 18-year old Prithvi Shaw came out to open the innings for DD and having scored a brisk 22(10), the team was well on their way to chasing down the target set. A couple of quick wickets from the tall Ankit Rajpoot at the end of the powerplay brought Punjab back into the game.

While they were regularly picking up wickets, Shreyas Iyer had one end covered and he played a very mature knock, taking the match to the last over, very much in MSD-fashion. He was up against the 17-year old Mujeeb Zadran with 17 required off the last over, but Delhi fell short by 4 runs even though Iyer managed a six and four in the over. He was heartbroken and so were Delhi supporters, with their team now having only one win in six matches. Man of the Match: Ankit Rajpoot.
