Dream11 gets rid of match deadline; crosses 5-Cr users

Dream11 is already the giant in the fantasy sports industry in India. They have led the industry for many years and last year saw them form new relationships with well-established sports authorities like former Indian team captain MS Dhoni, apex governing cricket body ICC, international hockey authority FIH and Australia’s Big Bash League.

Slashes match deadline to zero

This is just in. Dream11 has taken note of the myriad of its users suggesting cutting down the previous 60 and 90-minute deadline to zero. Dream11 has done it. They have finally done this much-awaited change, which was standard since the inception of the company.

This is a necessary change because sometimes, after a team is formed, injuries in warm-up sessions and random line-up changes lead to key players not playing in the match, and losses for fantasy players. Recently, 63% of players picked MS Dhoni for a NZ vs IND ODI, but an announcement was made following the 60-minute deadline that he wasn’t playing in the match.

Dream11 stated in its press release, “Since we love #FairPlay as much as you do, from 21st Feb 2019, 3PM onwards, we have moved the deadline for ALL sports to the start of the match! That’s right, you can create/edit your team and join contests right till the official match start time.

This move by Dream11 also goes in line with the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming Federation (IFSG) charter which lays down the basic guiding principles involving transparency, integrity and responsibility. You can read it here.

Crosses 5-Crore user mark

A recent report by analyst firm AC Nielsen and IFSG stated that Dream11 holds almost 90% of the market share in the Indian fantasy sports sector. With such things happening, it isn’t surprising that Dream11 have crossed the 5-Crore user mark on their platform. It was a long time coming, some industry watchdogs have said, since it’s obvious that the industry leader will in coming time make that landmark.

Dream11 also made a Facebook post to commemorate this event:

Commenting on the development, Harsh Jain, CEO and co-founder of Dream11 said, “We are thrilled to have 5 Crore Indian sports fans on our platform. This achievement reaffirms the growth potential of fantasy sports in India, signalling a new era for the Indian sports gaming industry. Backed by strong partnerships across sports genres and robust technology infrastructure, we will continue our efforts to expand our user base and provide the Indian sports fans with a personalised, immersive and engaging experience.

The company now boasts a 2-fold increase in its userbase in a short span of 12 months, from 2 Crores in Feb 2018 to 5 Crores. Here’s a graphic the company has put out to explain this:
