WSOP Exits ESPN Deal To Tie-Up With CBS Sports Network

In an announcement on Monday, CBS and PokerGO revealed that the World Series of Poker (WSOP) events will now be aired on CBS Sports Network. This also included 15 hours of the Main Event competition, which is the most prestigious event in any poker tournament. The news report comes just days after WSOP announced the dates for its World Series of Poker Online (WSOPO) 2021 event.

Until this recent development, the WSOP was regularly aired on ESPN since 2002. However, CBS was the first television channel to air the World Series during the mid-1970s. The agreement with CBS also includes airing 36 hours of 18 gold bracelet events of the WSOP.

Back in 2019, CBS also managed to live stream some of the gold bracelet events from the 50th Annual WSOP event through their partnership with PokerGO. Lon McEachern, David Tuchman, and Ali Nejad were among the main commentators for that event.

Dan Weinberg, the executive vice president of programming for CBS Sports expressed his delight at the partnership. “Following our past success with Poker Central, we are excited to expand our relationship with the highest-profile and richest event in competitive poker history while featuring the best players in the world. This deal fits perfectly in our strategy to combine best-in-class events with our CBS Sports brand.”

This could also mean that there would be an increased television coverage for WSOP. Something that is believed to put the poker industry into mainstream sports. Ty Stewart, Executive Director, WSOP stated, “CBS Sports has long been a pioneer in covering a broad range of championship sports. We couldn’t be more excited to see increased television coverage of the WSOP in the coming years and benefit from their growing media platforms.”
