WSOP 2019 Pro Tips: Things to do away from the felts!

It’s that time of the year again where thousands of players from around the world flock to Las Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the undisputed most prestigious series of poker in the world. Poker in India is picking up at a rapid pace too and we aren’t holding back for WSOP 2019 with our best players all having booked their tickets to Vegas and some in fact, already there.

The series has been scheduled between 28 May – 16 July and we’ve decided to help you out with some tips and tricks especially for first-timers in Vegas. A couple of days back, we spoke about some of the best Indian restaurants you can visit while in Vegas, while prior to that, we made a list of some high-value tournaments and series that would attract Indian players.

As part of our ‘WSOP 2019 Pro Tips’ series, we decided to talk about some of the recreational activities that one can do in the Sin City, as it is the entertainment capital of the world. Stressed after a day of grinding and need a break? This is the right place, especially since we’ve got some tips at the bottom from some of the best in the business – Dhaval Mudgal, Kunal Patni and Abhinav Iyer. Take a look:

Helicopter Ride over the Grand Canyon

Boasting dramatic scenery of enormous proportions, the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes. One of the most exciting ways to see it by air is on a Grand Canyon helicopter tour. There are several companies which offer different experiences from the basic 40 minutes to-and-fro flight or you can glam it up a bit by choosing a deluxe package where they set you down in the middle of the Canyon to have a glass of champagne and a quick bite while you take a tons of pics and selfies. Other LV sightseeing options include the Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam.

Cirque du Soleil

Magnifique as the French would say when you see a production of the world-famous artists from Cirque du Soleil. Aerialists, acrobats and strongmen can be seen at any of the seven resident shows of Cirque du Soleil. First-timers may want to catch the iconic O show at the Bellagio, a marvelous spectacle based around a stage that transforms into a pool in the blink of an eye. Mystere is another Cirque which is entirely based in water. But probably one of our personal favorites is the Absinthe show which can be caught at Caesars Palace. This is a naughtier take with performers wowing you with their physical abilities between blush-inducing banter definitely not for the prude or proper.

Freemont Street Experience

Now away from Strip towards the North of the city, lies the Freemont Street Experience. It’s nothing like you’ve seen before and first timers are almost invariably awestruck at the mind-blowing chaos of this area of Downtown.

Bellagio Fountains

Some of the most eye-catching attractions at the Bellagio – a supersize, all-American Italian villa—are the signature dancing fountains. You’ve likely seen the fountains in films like Ocean’s Eleven. The geysers—more than 1,200 in all—are nestled in the eight-and-a-half-acre lake in front of the resort and right on the Strip. Set to music, they erupt every half-hour in the afternoon and every 15 minutes throughout the evening until midnight. Best part of this show – its free!

Top Golf

Feel like taking a hard swing at bunch of golf balls?! Then Top Golf is where you need to head. Close to the off-strip Hard Rock hotel, Top Golf makes for a fun night out especially if you are going as a group. You’ve got three levels to drive golf balls while staring straight at the Strip skyline — which looks great day or night. You get to hang out in your own private bay, order drinks and food even as you cheer or distract your pals swinging their clubs away. 

High Roller at the LINQ

If there’s one touristy thing that every tourist and local alike should do in Las Vegas, it’s a spin on the High Roller. You’ll spend 30-40 minutes on the world’s tallest observation wheel – not to be confused with a ‘Ferris’ wheel, because you can actually stand up and walk around in this thing. And if you want to spend a few extra bucks, you can even arrange a private bartender to serve drinks throughout your rotation. It’s well worth the extra expense, since everything in Vegas is better with a drink — and a great view. At the highest point, you’ll be 550 feet in the air, offering perfect sight lines of the Strip, airport, surrounding valley, and pretty much all of Las Vegas.

If this isn’t enough, here are a few more places you can visit/things you can do in Vegas:

• Neon Museum/Mob Museum: One of the coolest museums in Las Vegas, you can take a tour of the Neon Museum which features signs from old casinos and other businesses, representing Vegas culture and history. General admission = $22. On the other hand, the town celebrates the legacy of organized crime in Las Vegas, which is on display at the Mob Museum. General admission = $26.95.
• Watch the Golden Knights in action: Fancy a little bit of ice hockey? The Vegas Golden Knights franchise have their home stadium in Las Vegas itself. Launching in 2017, the NHL franchise is also co-owned by Daniel Negreanu.
• Ziplining between towers: While there are several options for ziplining in Las Vegas, the best of these is the VooDoo Zip Line. Speeds crosses 30mph as you zip line from Rio’s Masquerade Tower’s 50^th floor to Ipanema Tower, which is around 800 feet lower.
• SpeedVegas: Yes, it is as exciting as it sounds. Nowhere in the world can you rent out supercars and drive them at such inexpensive rates as in SpeedVegas. Ferrari, Lamborghini, name it all and you can drive them over a 1.5 mile-long track, allowing a completely different scenario from the regular Vegas traffic.

 

_­­­­Pro Tips:

• Dhaval Mudgal: Bunch of different things you can do in your downtime in Vegas. The day clubs with pools are excellent for partying. You can take a day trip to the Grand Canyon, drive Supercars, go break stuff, throw axes on a target and even work in some hikes!
• Kunal Patni: Vegas is known for its various world-famous shows that take place in the different hotels. One should check out the schedule and definitely go for some of the shows. They are mind boggling! Cirque is my favorite. Also, lots and lots of other fun activities like paintball, luxury car driving, shooting and lots more. For parties and clubbing there will be lots and lots of gigs happening. Check out the schedule and decide accordingly. In all likelihood, some famous rock band or DJ will be playing in Vegas when you there.
• Abhinav Iyer: 2019 will be my second trip to the WSOP. Last year, I didn’t do much outside of poker. But the pool parties and nightlife with lots of events and concerts happening I’ve heard plenty about so will try and catch some this year. There are outlet malls too where you can shop top brands at heavily discounted prices.­
