WSOP 2019: 3rd bracelet for O’Dell; Maiden for Apter

Brett Apter wins Event #17: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout

Event 17 started with 917 players and when the dust settled it was Brett Apter who walked away with his first WSOP bracelet and top prize of $238,824 (~INR 1.65 Crores). On his way to the title, Apter defeated the likes of Eric Seidel in Round headsup. With seven left on the final table, Apter was one of the shorter stacks. His turnaround happened when he scooped up a three-way pot featuring eventual headsup opponent Anatolli Zyrin and Shintaro Baba. 

It was a long-winded heads-up battle against Russian player Zyrin. In the final hand of the tournament, Zyrin flopped top pair and predictably moved all-in. Unfortunately for him, Apter had AA and with bricks on the turn and river, that was all she wrote for this tournament as Brett Apter claimed his first World Series bracelet. 

Not surprisingly, it was a whirlwind of emotion for Apter in his post win interview, “I feel like I’m in a dream. I wanted this ever since I first started playing poker. Ever since I won yesterday, and knew I was going to the final table, it hasn’t felt real. I’ve just been trying to live up every moment at the final table.” No rest for the weary just yet as Apter will return the following day to participate in another bracelet event.

Frankie O’Dell makes it Three – Wins Event #18: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship

It was a landmark day for Frankie O’Dell and he can, for now, rightfully claim the lone spot on top of the Omaha Hi-Lo mountain. O’Dell, with his 3rd bracelet win, passed Chris Ferguson, Daniel Alaei and Scotty Nguyen, all of whom have 2 bracelets a piece in this particular tournament format, “There’s only one person in the WSOP who has three Omaha eight-or-better bracelets and you’re talking to them.” 

Typically in these high buy-in events, you find the cream of poker’s elite participating and not surprisingly this table too featured some of the biggest names of the game such as Shaun Deeb, David Benyamine, and Rob Campbell. If that wasn’t enough, three-way action had O’Dell squaring off against fellow bracelet winners Owais Ahmed and Robert Mizrachi. Ahmed in fact was looking good with more than 70% of the chips in play but O’Dell managed to grab the lead in a hand where both players held Kings but O’Dell made a straight.

From there on, it was no looking back for Frankie O’Dell as he knocked out Mizrachi first followed by Ahmed after a shortish headsafter, “Basically, the wind blew my way and I got the win,” said the winner O’Dell who dedicated his latest bracelet to his daughter and new born grandson.
