WPT Global is on a signing spree when it comes to its brand ambassadors. Hot on the heels of signing the Chinese esports player Xue Hong-Wei, the company has announced their signing of Phil Kessel, the National Hockey League (NHL) star and three-time Stanley Cup winner. Kessel is a prominent name in poker circles because fans have spotted him at several major poker events over the years. He has played in the WSOP every year since 2012 and has cashed in six different WSOP tournaments. His best live cash is $4,216 at the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em at the 49th World Series of Poker in 2018.
Kessel is a professional ice hockey player who has played for several American teams, including the Boston Bruins, Pittsburg Penguins, and Vegas Golden Knights. He won the Stanley Cup back-to-back with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He has totalled over 400 goals throughout his career and has an NHL Ironman record for the most consecutive games played.
With Kessel now officially part of the global poker fraternity, he is bound to be seen more at the World Poker Tour (WPT) events and probably more poker events as time progresses. If so, he will join the long list of celebrities who have become regulars at poker events. Experts see this as WPT’s way of advancing its ‘Team Canada’ initiative, which aims to improve the Canadian community’s engagement.
The company announced the collaboration to poker fans via a social media post.

Kessel’s signing up is just in time for the WPT Playground Festival, which will take place in Montreal from 13th to 30th October this year. Kessel is signed up for several personal appearances throughout the festival.

Kessel will also appear at the Iron Man Tournament on WPT Global on 27th November. He will play in the tournament, and the player who eliminates him wins a special package that features signed jerseys, photos, a puck, and a WPT Global Swag Bag, along with other paraphernalia. This is an invite-only tournament, and individuals wishing to participate need to register at WPT Global.
Celebrities joining up as poker ambassadors are becoming common, with several actors and other media personalities expressing their love for the game and, sometimes, even playing in series around the world. This is a positive development for Kessel, who has joined one of the oldest poker brands, one that has been organizing poker events since 2002.
Such partnerships are mutually profitable, as the company gains a ready-built fanbase and the celebrity gains inroads into a whole new category. WPT Global has been on a signing spree for the past few months, and this can only mean that the poker industry is all set to become all the more lucrative—all over again.
