Gambling rules in India are specific to every state. South Indian states have been taking a drastic step towards online gambling as several deaths due to the addiction of the aforementioned issue has been causing a menace. Among the four south Indian states, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have already called for a ban on online gambling.
Tamil Nadu being the latest to hop onto the bandwagon has imposed strict rules as per the ordinance passed this week. Rumour has it that neighbouring state Karnataka is also actively considering to impose a ban on online gaming sites and mobile applications in the state. Basavaraj Bommai, State Home Minister told reporters, “Online games are ruining many lives in the state. We have noticed it. Many illegal gambling and betting websites have mushroomed during the lockdown. We need to put an end to such a menace. The state government is still studying laws.”
He further added, “What is more worrisome is that our youngsters have become addicted to this type of gambling. Many have lost their properties. I appeal to parents and elders to come out and register a complaint against online platforms if any youngster is addicted to gambling and forcing them to give away their properties.”
Bommai also asserted that the police department has been actively trying to work on the problems related to drug consumption in the state. He emphasized on the fact that even if an accused is high-profile or low-profile perpetrator the police will not succumb to any pressure. He said, “For us going to the root of the problem is important and not the person per se”.
