The words Teen Patti directly translates to ‘three cards’. Teen Patti is a very frequently played Indian card game, almost identical to the British game 3 Card Brag. A pack of 52 cards is used, ranking in the order of ace (high) down to two (low). Teen Patti plays a huge part in Indian Popular culture as multiple Bollywood films have a scene or two based on the card game. Predominantly we have the antagonist involved in card games who apparently ‘Knows no bad, Does no bad.’
Talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s 1999 film Baadshah, the film has an excellent potrayal of how one should not behave in a casino, mainly while playing Teen Patti. Roughly, the plot of the film is about Raj (Shah Rukh Khan), a young man living with his mother, who follow his late father’s footsteps by working as a detective named Baadshah. He runs Baadshah Detective Agency and that’s when he is asked to procure diamonds from a dealer in a casino. Take a look at a snippet from the film:
A heads up between Shahrukh and his opponent underway, as they bluff his opponents by tactfully fooling him using sunglasses. Shahrukh’s friend Johnny Lever uses printed sunglasses when he picks up the card and this leads to the opponent believing the reflection on his sunglasses and placing the bet. Shahrukh wins when he flips the three King cards and his opponent has a jaw dropping loss.
Let’s discuss why Johnny Lever, or you should not wear reflecting glasses when in a casino:
