Vietnamese police arrests 16 in online gambling raid

While the world is fighting against the harmful virus which has already taken away thousands of lives across the planet, the government of respective nations have installed a series of comprehensive measures to combat the spread and at the same time few countries have been able to control the virus from spreading further. Vietnam has recorded 328 positive cases out of which 279 have already recovered. The nation lifted its 22-day social distancing directive on 23 April and now another news that unrolled in the country is considered to be the biggest ever illegal gambling operations uncovered by Vietnamese authorities.

On Thursday the Vietnamese police raided a gambling den in Hanoi, smashing a massive online card ring that is the biggest ever bust of its kind in the country, estimating at 64 trillion dong ($2.7 billion) over a period of time. Police detained 16 individuals all of whom are believed to be involved in the illegal operation including the mastermind behind the entire scheme named Truong Ngoc Tu.

According to a report, there are numerous ‘No Hu’ agents across Hanoi, the widely popular site roughly means ‘break the jar’. Millions of accounts were created for the game and “transactions ran to $110 million a month”, said the An Ninh Thu Do (Capital Security) newspaper. Using this website, the 37-year-old Ngoc Tu targeted several clients around Vietnam. People who used to play needed to deposit cash to get virtual currency. Thousands and millions of such accounts were established with illegal websites and up to $110 million in transaction were processed each month.

The police arrested 16 people and seized 34 smartphones, 23 ATM cards, 5 laptops and about hundreds of sim cards in the raids. “I lost so much money playing games on this site. You might win at first, but the more you play, the more you lose,” an anonymous player told AFP.
