Netflix’s search for an executive to lead its gaming vertical is finally over with Mike Verdu being appointed as its new vice president of game development. For a while now, Netflix has been planning to move beyond movies and TV shows and dive into the world of video games. The announcement of the new addition to the team was made on Wednesday.
Mike Verdu has worked in Electronic Arts Inc, Atari, and Facebook Inc as well. When he was 20-years-old Verdu founded a defense software company which he later sold in 1990 to solely focus on video games. He was responsible for bringing games and various other content to Oculus VR (virtual reality) headsets during his time at Facebook. As Netflix’s new vice president of game development, Verdu will be directly reporting to Chief Operating Officer, Greg Peters.
According to the news reports, Netflix will soon offer video games on its streaming platform. The video games option will be made available along with the other content on the platform. This will be similar to Netflix introducing the stand-up specials and documentaries. Currently, the company is not looking to charge extra for the gaming content.
This expansion into the gaming sector comes at a time when the company is looking to pull in more subscribers and compete with fierce competitors like Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV+. Previously, Netflix had given its users interactive programs like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and You vs Wild where viewers get to decide how the story will progress.
It has also created games based on its shows like Stranger Things and Money Heist (La casa de Papel). The company has also started selling TV show related merchandise on its recently launched online store Netflix Shop.
