The Trapped comic book is based on the poker world, and the protagonist has played poker all his life—not just in the big leagues. The game of poker has inspired several fiction projects, including the legendary movie Rounders (1998).
While there is talk about that movie’s sequel, there’s another poker-based fiction project that’s become the talk of the town. That project is the comic book Trapped by Joe Stapleton. Stapleton is a popular poker commentator and was the host of the popular Poker in the Ears podcast. Joe has written the comic book with Neil Gibson.

The writer describes the comic as a meeting of Rounders, Deadpool, and House of Games, the popular British quiz show. Early reviews say the comic book’s sense of humour and ready wit make it popular with the reading crowd.
According to an interview, the writer has been influenced by the early X-Men comic books, more accurately, the Phoenix saga. He has also confirmed that if the comic book gets a good response, there will be more of them, and those will continue the story.
Trapped follows the adventures and travails of Joe, a poker commentator who doesn’t play for the high stakes but instead examines lesser-value cash games, including private home games. When he is fired, he has the opportunity to re-look at his life and decide what he should do, going ahead. The comic book has the protagonist playing poker with several Hollywood celebrities, so that should be a unique outing for them.

Interestingly, the comic book has been spotted at some poker venues, and a review says that it is a way for poker players to take a break from the game while remaining comfortable with its concept.
Comic books based on sports and skill-based games are a rarity so that it will be an interesting read for the poker community. However, for a fiction project to be successful, it needs mainstream success as well. Whether Trapped has it within itself to create a mainstream following for itself remains to be seen.
Recently, a movie with poker concepts, ‘Dead Money’, had a limited release. The movie starred Emile Hersch and India Eisley as a couple who fall in trouble after thieves decide to rob the poker game. The plot is based on violence at a private poker game, which later happened in real life – only this time, no robbers were involved.
