Maria Konnikova tweeted saying, “One of the most important lessons Erik Seidel taught me: no bad beat stories. Ever. No exceptions. A crucial idea – and a building block of emotional resilience.” The poker pro agreed on teaching a journalist how to play poker. Konnikova, a psychologist and writer, best known for her ‘The Confidence Game’ and ‘Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes’, has a fascinating story to tell.
According to Hendon Mob, the Russia born Konnikova has accumulated over $311K in total live winnings with her career first and best win in 2018 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure No Limit Hold’em PCA National for $84,600. The same year she finished second in APPT NLH for $57K. The talented lady whose live poker career began three years from now has already cashed more than 10 times in WSOP.
Poker is a gripping game where knowledge and observation can play a significant role to bring about victory. The Ph.D. in Psychology had a run of bad luck, but it was poker that was the perfect vehicle for her to explore her skill, chance, interest. Surely, movies like Rounders, The Molly’s Game explore the world of live high-stakes poker with real life poker match held in the background. Konnikova became interested in the mind sport after reading John von Neumann’s work on game theory. She describes it as a way to examine the mind’s responses to conditions that involve both skill and chance. And her latest book, ‘The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win’, Konnikova went all the way from novice to poker pro.
She learned from Erik Seidel, one of the best poker players of all time, a framework to make her own decisions. “Seidel won’t tell me how to play a hand not because he’s being mean but because that answer comes at the expense of my developing ability to make good decisions. I have to learn to think through everything for myself, on my own. All he can give me are the tools. I’m the one who has to find the way through.”
To research the book she chose to fully immerse herself in the game and attempt to make it on the live tournament circuit. And now, her newest book has caught attention in social media with pros like 6-time WSOP winner Daniel Negreanu tweeting, “Looking forward to reading this one! Got mine ordered and will be reading it right away.”
