School Headmaster and nine others held for gambling in Tamil Nadu

Several illegal gambling stories are cropping up in different parts of the country. With the nationwide lockdown, people are engaging more and more into illegal activities despite the authorities taking severe actions against each of them. In a recent update that came from Tirupattur, a new district of Tamil Nadu where the Umarabad police arrested a government school headmaster along with nine other individuals involved in gambling in a makeshift tent.

The incident took place on Wednesday, 17 June, based on a tip-off, the police raided A Palani’s house located in Govindhapuram. The illegal activity was taking place behind one of their houses in the village. The cops immediately seized INR 85,000 in cash and cards along with six motorcycles and at least 10 mobile phones. One of the police officer said, “Based on a tip-off, we raided Palani’s house located in Govindhapuram village and found these men gambling.”

Among the accused was a headmaster, P Poovaraghavan (58) of Nayakkaneri Government High School. Others arrested were natives of Ambur, Govindhapuram, Devalapuram, Vellore and nearby places including A Palani, M Raffiq Ahamed, P Balaji, M Jeevarathinam, M Suresh, A Asif, K Kaliarasan, R Kuppusamy all of whom belonged to the age group of 29 to 58.

The police officer also added that the headmaster was “habitual gambler” and a gambling case is already pending against him in Tirupattur. After a successful raid, the Umarabad police inspector K Saravanan stated those guilty were arrested under the Sections 188 and 269 of IPC; Sections 2 and 3 of the Epidemic Disease Act and Section 51 of the Disaster Managing Act for defying the rules of lockdown violations and Section 4 (3) Tamil Nadu Gambling Act. However, further investigation on the matter is underway.
