Xiaobo Zhou wins inaugural OPC Macau Main Event

Just a few days back, Malaysia’s Ivan Leow created history by becoming the first High Roller winner of the Oriental Poker Championship (OPC). The inaugural OPC took place at the Venetian Macau between 23-28 May and the final event to conclude at this series was the HKD 16,500 Main Event.

After winning the HKD 100k High Roller, Leow was on a roll, topping Day 1c, Day 2 and then even Day 3 of the Main Event, coming into the final 8 players with a massive lead. He would’ve been looking to further enter Macau poker history books and complete back to back titles, but China’s Xiaobo Zhou got in his way.

While Leow maintained the lead for majority of the tournament, he gave it away towards the ending stages, going into heads up against Zhou with a considerable chip deficit. The battle was over in just a few hands, with Leow ultimately going all-in with K-4, and Zhou calling with Q-J. The flop opened Q-J-Q giving Zhou an immediate full house and it was just a formality to see the turn (5) and river (7) before Zhou was crowned champion.

While Leow had a great week, it was Zhou who took home the title, and HKD 1,451,000 ($184,939) for first place, beating the strong field of 513 entries. “I come from Beijing, I’ve been playing for nine years, and this is my first big score. It means so much to me. I want to thank my family for being by my side,” he said after his career-best win yesterday.
