The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event held in Nevada and New Jersey saw a huge turnout of players in the second part of the series. The number of players exceeded the global version which was hosted on GGPoker. The WSOP is one of the most awaited events of the year, which is normally held live in Las Vegas. The series attracts thousands of poker enthusiasts every year. This year, however, the pandemic caused the live events to be cancelled and was moved online. But despite the change in format, it seems that the passion for the game is as strong as it was earlier on.
An impressive number of 705 players participated in the single Day 1 freezeout that took place on Sunday, 14th December. The massive number of entries increased the prize pool of the $10,000 event to an equally massive $6,768,000. Executive Director of the WSOP, Ty Stewart commented, “Considering the circumstances a turn out of 1,370 players is a strong field size that will make a mark in the history of the event. It is also a significant milestone for regulated online poker and I can’t wait to see who will win this world championship bracelet.”
The vast turnout is a huge thing and unheard of in any high roller tournament in such a market. The $6,768,000 GTD is almost seven times bigger than the largest tournament. But when compared to the international edition, it attracted less than 700 players, even though it was held across the globe. The success is even more prominent and noteworthy. The WSOP will continue till the first week of 2021 and hope that we will see more similar kinds of records being smashed which will surely go down in history.
