The Rise And Fall of Zynga Poker

The first decade of the 21st century was eventful to say the least. With the concept of the internet just freshly entering the Indian consciousness, it was a time when Facebook ruled the social media space. It was on this platform where Zynga, the social game developer flourished. The company’s claim to fame was the Facebook game, Farmville. But even before that, there was Zynga Poker, a social poker game that was launched in 2007.

Gameplay of Zynga Poker

Accessible to Facebook users, Zynga Poker gave players a simulated experience of playing Texas Hold’em poker. Once signed up for the game, players entered a casino lobby after which they could go and play on any table or even with their Facebook friends. Users also had the option to choose the kind of tables they wanted to play which included tournaments and VIP tables as well. The game’s leaderboard recorded and displayed scores. Users could look at how well their friends were doing and even had an option to send and receive gifts.

Considering that poker was gaining immense popularity during the 2000s, it was not a surprise that Zynga Poker was one of the trending games on Facebook. According to one article, around 38 million players had registered to the game and it was reported to be the largest poker site in the world. It had dominated the social game market by grabbing over 61% of total revenue.

After riding high on its success for almost 7 years, the game was soon in troubled waters after a major update in 2014. The update did not go down well with users of the game and soon many people stopped playing the game. It was reported that Zynga Poker received a 44% drop in its audience. The decline in its user base pushed the creators to bring back a pre-updated version of the game.

However, Zynga Poker did not bounce back from its massive drop in 2014. While it still managed to make a slight profit in 2019, it was not able to replicate the kind of success it once had.
