Negreanu loses Player of the Year title to Robert Campbell

Remember that time when host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe 2015 pageant? So was the scenario and an epic turn of events when an inaccuracy was unveiled confirming that Daniel Negreanu isn’t the rightful owner of the Player of the Year title.

One of the craziest moments in poker history, the clerical error discovered by the World Series of Poker (WSOP) after a week, while the poker industry and Negreanu had been celebrating his record-breaking 3rd POY title. The WSOP issued a statement today to recognize the poker pro Robert Campbell, in fact, the actual winner of the 2019 WSOP POY with Shaun Deeb finishing in second place and Negreanu in third place.

Negreanu shipped his WSOP POY award in the year 2004 and 2013. The 6-times bracelet winner was among the 15 players who did not receive a paycheck in the Event #68: a $1,000 WSOP.com online bracelet tournament, and yet managed to receive the POY points.

On Friday, the WSOP POY title was rightfully awarded to Campbell, with WSOP also releasing a public statement. “We have confirmed an error was made in our results for WSOP Event #68, affecting places 32-46. As a result, Daniel Negreanu was given 213.1 points erroneously in this event. We deeply regret this error and its impact. Recalculating our Player of the Year results has an impact on the standings. Robert Campbell finishes in 1st place in the now final results, with Negreanu dropping to third place. Again, we apologize profusely for the error in our calculations and the impact it has had.”

The recent WSOP Europe hosted the Colossus which marked Negreanu with 4,074.88 POY points, putting him ahead of Campbell who had 3,961.31 points and Deeb with 3,917.32 points. Each bracelet winner cashed in the final WSOPE bracelet event. Campbell (149th) earned 103.3 points and the New Yorker, Deeb (11th) for 206.7 points. Ultimately, it was Campbell leading with 99 points.

However, Negreanu stated, “I’m genuinely happy for Robert, he is a good guy and he is deserving. Obviously, my strategy would have been different had I known where I actually stood, but such is life. I have no regrets. I set out to achieve a goal and I focus on the journey. That journey got me to where I set my goal. Unfortunately, the points miscalculation means no POY for me!”

Campbell who won two bracelets this summer expressed, “I would like to thank the WSOP, the Rio, and King’s for a fantastic tournament series. I had one of the most exciting years of my life.”
