In conversation with the latest SSS Millionaire, Saurabh Rohila!

The March month on Spartan Poker was crammed with multiple Millionaires and monthly series, laying down opportunities for different stakes players to grind online. The 11-day Spartan Super Series (SSS) wrapped up, giving way to a newbie who claimed a hefty prize money on Day 11 along with the prestigious SSS Millionaire title!

Playing under the username ‘darksider’, Saurabh Rohila “didn’t even know how to react at 4am” after winning his first ever online poker tournament. The 27-year-old was the showstopper on the night of 22^nd March when he outlasted a massive field of 1,256 entries in SSS #61 Millionaire INR 1 Crore GTD, banking a 7-digit figure but that’s not it! Playing simultaneously on SSS #63 Electric Big Daddy, he went onto claim the second position there too.

Originally from Rajasthan, the IIT Delhi pass out is currently working for an e-commerce company in Bangalore. Rohila’s journey in poker started in 2011 when he was introduced by his college friend Devang Yadav and ended up grinding on Adda52. It is even more interesting to know that Rohila was least aware of the fact that he was competing against circuit popular Raman Gujral aka ‘tathagat’ in heads-up for the Millionaire title until that day. So, Gutshot caught up with him asking a few questions about his poker journey, the fantastic Sunday run and how it feels to be crowned Millionaire on Spartan Poker for the first time!

Hi Saurabh, how does it feel to be crowned the Spartan Millionaire?

“I can’t describe this feeling, I am overwhelmed! I didn’t even know how to react on this at 4am in the morning. But yes, it has boosted my confidence levels for sure.”

How was the pressure on the FT with such massive prizes at stake?

“I played my natural game. In fact, I got to know about other regular players the very next day after the tourney got over. My only strategy was to put pressure and take out as much chips as I could.”

At which point in the tournament did you believe you could win?

“I realized that there was a chance only on the final table when I was third in the chip lead. After that, I took a big pot from the chip leader. At that point of time I got a feeling that I can finish in top 2 or 3 at least, if not ship it.”

This was a life-changing Sunday; you also finished second in SSS #63 Electric Big Daddy. How would you attribute this run?

“I could not imagine a better run than this! Truly, I am not a full-time or a regular player and for me even a final table was a big deal and I’m glad everything went really well on the day.”

Whom do you look up to in the poker circuit?

“I don’t have a mentor. I don’t even play regularly but I have a few friends from college who are full-time in poker and doing really good. I always looked up to them and somehow wanted to reach at that level which I still see is quite far to reach.”

Any plans for this prize money?

“Frankly speaking, I don’t have any idea how to spend it at this situation of lockdown but yes, it’ll definitely give my bankroll a boost for a longer period in the circuit.”

Any advice for other players playing the next millionaire?

“Play your A game. Look for the best spots but do not commit too much into tough spots.”
