Importance of physical fitness for poker players!


Poker playing is all about focusing and making it big at the main event! To stay consistent throughout the game, and chase the pot you need to be mentally and physically fit! Your mind is what controls you!

Nature of Poker tournaments

During poker tournaments, you are expected to stay up for tournaments that go upto 8-9 hours. To reach the top, you need to play your best when you are nearing the finish line, the final table. But before reaching this stage of the tournament, you are expected to go through multiple stages. 

You are expected to:

  • Resist fatigue and focus for a longer period of time. 
  • Make a final decision and struggle through with backache.

You fitness is also tested when you are traveling to play in a live poker tournament. Different time zones, inappropriate eating habits, constant travel and despite this you are expected to ace your game! To be able to focus on each hand, pick up on opponent’s tendencies, and play your A-game requires a fit state of mind and body.

SOMETHING LIKE YOGA?

Steven Van Zadelhoff, former WCOOP main event champion is a fitness freak! He has been passionate about nutrition and believes in the right kind of food!  Steven says, ‘everything in moderation’. Ace poker player Zadelhoff has always been vocal about their food habits.  For an Indian player who is familiar with yoga you could practice suryanamaskar two or three times a day to attain a fixed body clock! A well oiled machine is the first step to lead a disciplined life altogether!

Your mind will stay sharp only if the body says it is fine. Regular exercise, healthy eating, meditation are some of the things that one needs to concentrate on.
