The Poker Sports League (PSL) is arguably the biggest tournament-style event for poker in the country and fans across India have been preparing for Season 3 of the tournament. The online qualifiers have been on since a while on their app, #Hashtag Poker, as players go through the first round of screening.
The online participation is said to have increased by around 50% as compared to Season 2, mostly because everyone has been at home due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, the outbreak has also gone on to cancel their offline qualifiers which was the second round in the process of selecting 13 players for each franchise team.
Usually, completion of the online/offline qualifiers would lead to player drafting and then the final selection ceremony where the teams are formed. All 6 franchise teams would then get together and battle it out over 8 days in the PSL 3 Finale to become champion and take home a share from the INR 4 Crore prize pool, the biggest among poker leagues in India.
However, the dates of the finale and broadcast on television are now almost sure to get postponed, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. This isn’t the first poker event to be cancelled as most of the major brands have taken their events online during such a time, with a 21-day lockdown being imposed in India.
While the numbers seen in the PSL 3 online qualifiers have been quite encouraging signs for poker in India, this growth has been slightly stunted at the moment. No further details have emerged from the PSL team but to know more about this story, make sure you’re tuned in to GutshotMagazine.com.
