Australia Welcomes Its First Live Poker Tournament Series Post COVID-19


According to a report by iag (inside asian gaming), the Star Gold Coast and World Poker Tour collaborated to host the first casino-based poker tournament series in Australia ever since the pandemic struck. The number of people who participated was huge. Reports stated that WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast series went on from 21 to 31 May 2021. It attracted a total of more than 4,000 entries across 10 events. Among them were about 1,113 entries recorded at the main event – $1,160 event. 

Further the reports stated that the total size of the Main Event field created a record of being the largest in Asia-Pacific history for the World Poker Tour compared to the 898 players that were seated at the WPT National China that took place in 2014.

According to a report by iag (inside asian gaming), a record was created when the largest prize pool for a WPT tournament at The Star Gold Coast, i.e. $15,02,550 beat the record of WPT Australia in 2019 which was $14,80,500.

Further reports stated that WPTDeepStacksGold Coast was the first live tournament series in Australia since the APL Million that took place at The Star Gold Coast in March 2020

Jessica Mellor, the COO of The Star Gold Coast reportedly told the media that The Star Gold Coast was absolutely thrilled with the results from the WPTDeepStacks, not only breaking many records across Asia Pacific but also treating the visitors to 11 days of great fun in the city and world-class hospitality. She also stated that the results were a wonderful sign for the future of the Australian poker and a boost for the tourism industry in the country. 

Mellor further stated that poker is thriving in Australia and The Star Gold Coast proved that it could meet the rise in popularity with the state-of-the-art poker space, suite of award-winning restaurants, offering of five-star accommodation, bars and of course the stunning weather and coastal location. She also stated that The Star and Gold Coast were looking forward to continuing the partnership with WPT and bringing more tournaments to them. 

Reports from iag (inside asian gaming) stated that Sydney’s Will Davies eventually won the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast Main Event. Further it stated that during the event the WPT made an announcement that it is planning to host its first ever WPT main tour stop on Australian soil at The Star Gold Coast somewhere in October. The exact dates have not yet been declared.
