ARIA’s The Ivey Room renamed to ‘Table 1’

Inaugurated in May 2010, The Ivey Room in Las Vegas, quickly became popular and attracted a decent crowd daily. It is one of the premium poker clubs in the city. In a recent decision taken by the room’s owner, ARIA Resort and Casino, the room has now been renamed to ‘Table 1’.

On Wednesday morning, ARIA staff removed The Ivey Room plaque and replaced it with a plaque bearing the words ‘Table 1’. The casino’s director of poker operations Sean McCormack said that the idea for the name change came from Elayne Teitelbaum, the ARIA poker room host. McCormack even said that the decision is fitting since a lot of ARIA players have been referring to the room by its new name for quite a while now. McCormack even made a tweet regarding this:

ARIA’s The Ivey Room renamed to ‘Table 1’

Coming to Phil Ivey, he has been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle with Atlantic City’s Borgata since a long time. What happened was that in 2010-12, he was caught by Borgata for using a fraudulent method called ‘edge-sorting’ in the game of Baccarat along with his partner Cheung Yin Sun. They had earned $9.6 million by exploiting the game.

After years of Ivey delaying payment of $1.16 million in a pending case against Borgata, the latter finally received the go-ahead by a Nevada Court to seize his Ivey’s properties in Nevada early this month.

Coming to Table 1, formerly known as The Ivey Room, for nearly 9 years it was one of the most popular high-stakes rooms in the sin city and drew some of the world’s well-established players to the felt. Another legendary room of the city is Bellagio’s Bobby Room, named after 1978 WSOP ME champion Bobby Baldwin, which received tough competition from The Ivey Room.

ARIA is owned by MGM Resorts International, the same parent company that owns Borgata in Atlantic City too. ARIA no longer wanted to be associated with someone who has duped their company of millions and that is why the name change was done, some experts point surmise.

However, that’s not the official reason for changing its name. McCormack said that it had nothing to do with Ivey’s recent legal troubles and lastly added, “Nothing lasts forever. Obviously, Phil is still an incredible player and still very much relevant in the poker world, but we thought it was time for a rebrand.
