With all the poker terms we’re learning, it looks like many of these terms have often been named after some interesting figures in history. Learning poker terms that are very much a part of the game is an excellent way to build a connection to it. Today we’ll be exploring the term, ‘Anna Kournikova.’ Like the poker term, ‘Barbara Hutton,’ this term derives its name from a famous woman figure.
The term is used to refer to the Ace-King starting hand in poker but the ‘AK’ initials are not the only reason for the term. The hand is cynically named after the Russian tennis pro Anna Kournikova who is famous for her beauty but is not actually one of the best tennis players in the world.

The same sentiment is given to the Ace-King hand as many consider it to be a better-looking hand than it actually is. The Ace-King hand often looks like a premium hand is a disappointing one when it doesn’t give any results once the board opens. Many poker players are guilty of overplaying this hand as it seems to be a promising one but it isn’t.
Anna Kournikova is a former Russian-American tennis professional born in Jun 1981. She is one of the most well-known tennis players in the world despite never winning even one singles title. She found more success in playing doubles and is widely known for her beauty in the sports arena. She retired from professional tennis in 2003 due to health issues. However, despite her infamous reputation, there is no denying that Kournikova still managed to influence pop culture and other games with her presence.
