Poker pro Mirzikinian apologizes for accidentally killing cyclist

Poker player with over $1 million in total live winnings was charged over a crash that killed a French food delivery cyclist almost three years ago. A couple of days back, the Australian poker pro Warwick Mirzikinian confessed that he thinks about his victim every day since the incident.

In November 2017, Mirzikinian was driving his luxurious car on New South Head Road in Sydney, when he accidentally struck and killed the 24-year-old Uber Eats cyclist and food courier, Julien Trameaux . The NSW Police in a statement revealed that the 49-year-old was issued a court attendance notice for dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasion death. According to the Daily Mail, Mirzikinian’s wife, a Sydney socialite named Kristy made a national news in the country when expressing her reaction to a sinkhole.

Mirzikinian addressed his sentence hearing in the Downing Centre District Court on Friday, telling Judge Chris O’Brien of his intense grief and sorrow for the accident which killed the young French national. As the judge prepared to sentence him, the 2017 Sydney Championships winner said he was sorry and that a day doesn’t go by when he doesn’t think about the incident. The court heard that a few moments prior to the accident, Mirzikinian was blinded by the sun beam and initially thought his vehicle had been struck by the bus. It was only after he got out of the car that he witnessed the cyclist on the ground.

“Any hurt and pain that I have felt is nothing compared to what they have felt and will continue to go through,” the poker pro continued, “there is nothing I can say or do to take back my actions on the day, even though I have prayed that it was possible. I am sorry. I can sincerely say that there has not been a single day that has passed over the last two-and-a-half years that I have not thought about Julien and what I did on that day.”

Mirzikinian’s barrister, Mark Tedeschi QC told the court that his client’s actions were on the lowest level and that he should be spared jail. He also pointed out that his only fault was changing lanes but was driving below the speed limit. On the other hand, the victim was wearing earphones and a backpack containing food which made little noise were also factors in the incident. “We submit this case is quite different to the usual dangerous driving case. It’s this which makes this case one of those exceptional cases in which a non-custodial sentence is appropriate.”

However, the Sydney court lead by Judge Chris O’Brien will announce its decision and judgement on 10 July. For more updates on poker news around the world, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com and stay tuned!
