Poker Dictionary – House Rules

Every poker room has its own specific set of poker rules referred to as ‘house rules.’ Poker rooms usually print their rules and hang them near the entrance or have it on their website for the players to read. Why are these house rules needed? House rules are needed because every poker room must have a couple of rules specific to the location, game and more. If the rules aren’t followed, then the poker room has the authority to take any action on the player.

‘Robert’s Rules Of Poker’ is a book that is widely followed and written by leading American poker player Bob Ciaffone. He first-authored this rule book, a comprehensive set of poker rules for the general public. Ciaffone has worked on thePoker Dictionary – House Rules Las Vegas Hilton, Hollywood Park Casino and The Mirage rules and has also assisted on several other cardrooms. This rulebook is also revised periodically, and Ciaffone welcomes suggestions. The rule book was produced so that the best set of rules are imposed and so it can be used for the betterment of poker.

Some basic standard house rules are:

• Speaking in a particular language only when on the table
• The house makes the final call when there is any confusion during a hand
• The house has the authority to remove anyone from the game in case of players break any rules
• Respecting all poker etiquettes
• Not acting out of turn

There are also separate rules for poker tournaments and cash games. Some general rules that are followed for cash games are:

• Only one person handles all the buy-ins and payouts
• Players are expected to buy-in using cash only as some poker rooms still follow methods
• Every player must call at least half an hour before they leave.
