Poker Dictionary – Hero Call

Poker is not just a game of skill, it also requires a good hold on one’s psyche. You have to read your rivals in the game in order to understand their game and also their bluff. You never know what hand the opponent holds, so you try to read the opponent and predict if he/she has a strong hand or a weak hand. At times your predictions may be on point, sometimes the opponent may be too good at tricking you. But that’s what makes a game of poker an interesting one. Today we will discuss one such poker term that is often based on predictions—Hero call.

What is a Hero Call?

A hero call is a call you make with a relatively weak hand suspecting that the opponent is bluffing. This is a highly risky call you make at the table on the basis of mere suspicion or prediction.

A hero call in Texas Hold’em and Omaha are usually made on the river, i.e., the final round of betting. It occurs when an opponent makes a huge bet or raise and you decide to call the bet or raise suspecting the opponent is bluffing.

For example, in Hold’em a board comes, an opponent makes a large bet, and you call with , to make a pair of sixes. You suspect the opponent is falsely representing a stronger hand, hence you call. The opponent then shows and you made the ‘hero call.’ You win the pot since you have a pair of sixes, and the opponent doesn’t have any valid hand to win.

Why ‘Hero Call’?

As mentioned earlier it is a highly risky move that a player makes with a relatively weaker hand. Since these calls are highly risky and brave, the ‘heroic’ action gives it the name of a Hero Call.

How to use a Hero Call?

Because of the risk factor involved, a hero call is advisable only if

a) Your opponent is known to pull big bluffs.

b) The way you play your hand justifies the call.

The situation where both these conditions are met, is the most ideal scenario to make a Hero Call.
