Poker Dictionary – Face Card

If you have been familiar with poker or had any encounter with the game, you must have realised that the game of poke has several terms and jargon that are not only new but also interesting to know. In our poker dictionary series, we look forward to sharing with you some interesting terms that are fun to know about. And why not? It’s always good to know more terms.

Today, we will discuss one such poker term that will add to your poker knowledge and also enable you to flaunt it. You must have come across the term ‘face card during poker conversations. But, what is a face card? Let’s find out:

What are ‘Facecards’?

The king, queen and jack cards are known as face cards. A card in a deck represented by any king, queen or jack irrespective of the suit is known as a face card.

Although some people also consider the ace to be a face card, it is not recognised as a face card in poker. Face cards are also known as picture cards, paint or court cards.

Why ‘Facecard’?

The simple logic why the king, queen and jack are termed as face cards is because they are represented by the members of the royal hierarchy. These cards usually have a human-like face printed on them, unlike the other cards of the deck.

They are known as ‘picture cards’ because of their feature of having a picture printed and not symbols or shapes like the other cards. Face cards are known as ‘paint’ because these are the only cards that are ornate.

That explains why the ace is not considered as a face card, simply because the ace does not have a face printed on the card. Some people even argue if jokers can be considered as face cards, because they have a face printed. However, in the game of poker, the jokers in the deck are not used, hence, they are not considered as face cards in poker.

How to play the face card?

Since the face cards represent the king, queen and jack, these three cards have the highest value after ace. Being high-value cards, if you have a face card as your hole card, you can choose to bet depending on the other hole card you hold.

If a face card appears on the flop, it’s a good indication for the last person who made an aggressive call pre-flop. Because he made an aggressive call, one can judge that he has higher-value cards.

If the turn or river shows a face card, it is usually considered as a good opportunity to bluff. However, the success of such a bluff largely depends on your skills and your opponents.
