Who is Barbara Hutton?

Born in 1912, Barbara Hutton was an American socialite, heiress and philanthropist. She was most famously known for her lavish lifestyle and troubled personal life. Dubbed by the media as ‘Poor Little Rich Girl,’ she was one of the wealthiest women in the world and heiress to a third of the Frank Winfield Woolworth estate.

The F.W Woolworth Company was one of the first pioneers of the five-and-dime stores in the United States. Five-and-Dime is a retail store or a variety store that sells various general merchandise at discounted prices. The popularity of the stores soon made the company into one of the most successful businesses in the US.

Hutton’s infamous and lavish lifestyle coupled with the success of her grandfather’s business caused her name to be associated with the five and ten hand in poker.
